11. Josephine: The Girl Who Didn't Fit the Mold

If you haven't read the first book, I don't want to ruin it for you. I will say that Josephine was kidnapped and lived in a cult for eleven long years against her will. While there, she bore a child and named her daughter Angel. This beautiful child, born under imperfect and painful circumstances, gave Josephine a reason to not only survive, but to escape. There is one problem. Josephine has amnesia and can't remember a lot of things.

She remembers Lexi, but it took a month to recall bits and pieces of their childhood. All the things between are a fog, beginning with the kidnapping. But before I digress and begin writing book 2, SURVEILLANCE: The Josephine Chronicles, let me tell you about Josephine and how life took a side road on her journey to success.

Josephine was a naturally beautiful half American Indian, and half American African girl. When she entered the University of California with her best friend, Lexi Hunter, they had no idea how their lives would change forever. They were ready to conquer the world. Neither of the women realized how much power they held, nor did they understand the implications of their family names. But Steven Roberts knew.

Steven was looking for women and men who would love him unconditionally and give him the adoration he desired. He was also looking for people with a name and financial backing. Because of this need, he wanted to control the minds of those he recruited. There was no pleasure in forcing a person to worship you. That's what Steven wanted from Josephine. He was handsome and charming, and had never felt a failure like he felt with Josephine. But she didn't respond the way he had anticipated, and he didn't know what to do with that.

People like Steven had a playbook. His playbook converted mortal humans into a living gods. But Josephine didn't bite. It tormented Steven that he couldn't control Josephine. That one fact may have saved her in the end. She held an invisible power that Steven would never be able to understand. He offered recruits a chance to belong and to be part of something special. But Josephine had never fit in.
