David recalled the suit he'd had tailored while he was on a mission outside of US territory. French pinstripe wasn't his style, but the lightweight cashmere Armani had a necessary modification. It concealed the Glock pistol he carried in his shoulder holster so that the bulge was hard to spot. He remembered being a tad overdressed for his reclassification held at a secret range. But that was years ago. Now, he works as a Ghost Op for NOVA, Inc. a private IT company. But who they are and what they do for the public differs considerably from who they are and what they do covertly. He stood in a private range inside his home surrounded by weapons of any choice. He was preparing.
David knew exactly who he was dealing with. Steven Roberts was the kind of guy who needed to stay hidden, but he had a deep desire for admiration and attention. He'd had lots of practice manipulating others to gain attention when he had the compound. By shocking or provoking others, he could elicit strong reactions and ensure that the focus stayed on him. This helped him feel important and fed his need for attention.
The problem was he still craved attention and validation from others but he was in exile. Eventually, he would provoke someone to assert dominance and manipulate the situation to his advantage. It allowed Steven to feel superior and in control of the dynamics of his interactions and his life. Steven's goal is to elicit a reaction from Lexi, so by not giving him the satisfaction, he could take away his power. And when he surfaced, David would be there.
David knew Steven would soon try to push Lexi's buttons. Emotional detachment is difficult when you're dealing with a killer and you know he wants you dead. David tried to remind himself that Steven's behavior was a reflection of his own fears, not a reflection of David's ability to put the SOB in the ground. For now, David focused on Lexi, Josephine, and Angel's safety. He surrounded himself with surveillance equipment and weapons to provide a backup plan.
