In our fast-paced, digital world, the simple act of putting pen to paper can feel almost foreign. Yet, there is something inherently powerful about the physical motion of writing - the way it engages both my body and my mind in a harmonious dance of creativity and self-expression.
And when I pair this tactile writing experience with the tranquility and focus of the early morning hours, the results can be nothing short of inspirational. From enhanced cognitive function to emotional well-being, my early morning writing habit unlocks a treasure trove of thoughts that reverberate through every aspect of my life.
The Physical Act of Writing:
When I pick up a pen or pencil and begin to write, I’m engaging a complex network of neural pathways that connect my hand, my eyes, and my brain. This physical act of putting words to paper activates regions in my cerebral cortex responsible for fine motor skills, as well as the parts of my brain involved in language and memory.
In contrast, typing on a keyboard, while certainly valuable, doesn't provide me the same level of sensory input and neurological stimulation. The act of writing by hand has definitely improved my memory retention, as the physical movements involved help me solidify the information in my mind.
The slow, deliberate nature of handwriting encourages a state of mindfulness and presence. As I carefully form each letter, I become fully absorbed in the task at hand, allowing my mind to enter a meditative flow state that can boost concentration and creativity.
The Mental Benefits of Morning Writing:
Beyond the physical act of writing, the timing of my writing practice can also have a profound impact. I believe that indulging in this habit first thing in the morning, before the demands of the day take over, has given me a sense of mental and emotional well-being.
Science has proven that in the early hours, my brain is still in a relatively calm, state - the same state associated with deep relaxation and enhanced insight. This makes it an ideal time to tap into my subconscious, explore my innermost thoughts and feelings, and uncover innovative solutions to challenges I am facing. (I’ve experienced many challenges)
Morning writing helps me set the tone for the rest of my day. By carving out dedicated time for self-reflection and creative expression, I’m signaling to my brain that this is a priority, not an afterthought. It fosters a greater sense of purpose, focus, and emotional well-being that radiates through all of my daily activities.
Cultivating an Early Morning Writing Habit:
I’ve learned that the key to unlocking the transformative power of morning writing is consistency. I started with small steps, by committing to just 30 minutes per morning, and gradually built up my practice as it became a cherished part of my writing routine.
I created a dedicated space and time for my writing, free from distractions. I experimented with different writing prompts, journal formats, and the type of writing implement I prefer - the sensory experience plays a significant role in my creative flow. I have my coffee to the left of my computer and my notebook and pen to the right. This setup makes me feel like I can complete my writing goals for the day.
Most importantly, I approach this practice with self-compassion and an open mind. There will be days when my words won’t flow as easily, but I trust the process and allow my writing to evolve organically.
Try it sometime. Rise and write, my fellow creatives! Embrace the power of an early morning writing habit and witness the profound impact it can have on your cognitive abilities, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life. Your mind, body, and soul will thank you.
